Austin, TX — Today, members of the Texas Legislative Progressive Caucus left the state with their Democratic colleagues to deny a quorum in the Texas House and block the Trump Regime’s attempt to redistrict Texas’s congressional maps. Texans and all Americans deserve a voice that can be heard in government, not to be disenfranchised on the basis of race, and lawmakers who will stand up and fight when their constituents are under attack.

Thousands of Texans gave in-person testimony and submitted comments in opposition to the Trump Regime cheating their way into five more congressional seats ahead of the 2026 midterm elections. From every corner of the state, Texans called on their Democratic representatives and senators to use any means necessary to stand up to Trump, Abbott, and their billionaire-backed MAGA agenda. Democrats listened and took action.

This fight is about Texas, and it’s about so much more. Under two decades of Republican leadership, Texas is guilty of the highest uninsured rates in the country and among the highest rates for food insecurity. While Texas’s GDP has skyrocketed, the percent of Texas families that cannot afford essential expenses like housing and childcare has remained stagnant. Republicans have stolen from those who work to get by and funneled the profits into their donors’ pockets. Now, sixty-six Texas billionaires own more wealth than 70% of Texans combined.

Under the Trump Regime, billionaires and CEOs have gained unprecedented influence over our government and have profited as a result. From gutting federal departments that keep Americans safe to abducting our neighbors and separating families, the Trump Regime is enacting a total assault on our freedoms and on our lives—and all to the benefit of those who are already rich. But Texas Democrats have had enough.

Trump knows that his policies are deeply unpopular, and he doesn’t have a pathway to keeping control of the U.S. House unless he cheats and suppresses votes on the basis of race. So he told his wingmen in Texas to rig the congressional maps mid-decade to his advantage. Texas Democrats have a duty to stand up and fight back, and breaking quorum is a legitimate and honorable means to this end.

The members of the Texas Legislative Progressive Caucus are unified in the fight to protect the voting rights of Texans—and all Americans. This fight is just beginning, and the road ahead will be challenging. With our communities and constituents standing behind us, we will lead the way to a future where our government serves the working people of Texas instead of the billionaire class.
