The State of Texas is grieving the unthinkable loss of life in the Texas Hill Country over the Fourth of July weekend. Over one hundred sons and daughters of Texas are dead, and more than one hundred are still missing. The depth of the tragedy is indescribable, and it is still unfolding.
Tragedy brings us together. In our grief, Texans near and far have responded in the only way we know how – with outstretched hands and open hearts. All are praying. All are watching the numbers rise, and all are feeling the pit in our stomachs as one more is counted dead. In our collective grief, we are all neighbors. We are all Texans.
And yet, the Governor saw fit on Wednesday to proceed with a bitter partisan battle that will divide our legislature in a moment that demands unity. Governor Abbott is using the tragic loss of life in our state to further his and the Trump regime’s political aims by coupling flood response with congressional redistricting in his proclamation for the special session. We are disgusted, and we condemn this cowardly abdication of leadership.
In the midst of ongoing recovery efforts, the Governor should be leading us in putting down our partisan swords so that we can lock arms across party lines to meet the needs of those who have lost, to support and honor the sacrifice of the volunteers and first responders, and to prevent this from ever happening again. Instead, he has cowered to corrupt political demands from Washington, D.C. and betrayed our state, leveraging tragedy as cover to disenfranchise Texas voters and keep a corrupt president in power.
The Texas Legislative Progressive Caucus fiercely opposes the calling of a Trump Regime Special Session to redraw and rig congressional maps, and we urge all Texans to oppose the Trump Regime’s attempt to take away the power of our vote. We demand that the Governor end this partisan special session and instead dedicate every resource available to addressing the ongoing disaster recovery and prevention efforts for the future.
